Watertown Daily Times, Thursday Oct 14, 1971:
"Former Carthage board member, and line chief for Niagara Mohawk, died at 4am today at home. Having undergone surgery Mr. Shannon had just recently returned home. The funeral will be 2pm Saturday at the Bossout Funeral Home, with Rev. Kenneth Lord, pastor, Carrthage United Methodist Church, officiating. Buriel will be in Fairview Cemetery... Born in Kalurah, Feb 25, 1900, son of Thomas and Matilda Young Shannon, he was educated in Harrisville schools. He married Grace Koster in Harrisville in 1918. She died in 1922 in a swimming accident at Lake Bonap;art. A son, Neal, died in 1941 at the age of 21. He married Irene Caldwell, July 21, 1924, at First Bap;tist Church in Carthage. The couple operated a general store at their home from 1947 to 1960..."
"Originally employed at various times with Diana Paper Co., Harrisville, Watertown machine shop of the New York Central Railroad, and Utica Gas and Electric Co., he joined Niagara Mohawk as a lineman on Memorial Day 1924. In 1930 he began 25 years' service as a foreman, and in 1955 became general line foreman in charge of Carthage and Lowville. From 1940 to 1952 he served as a Republican trustee on the Carthage Village Board."
"One of the 1924 founders of the utilities' employes' association, in Watertown, he was a former trustee of the Branaugh Memorial Boys Club. He also was formerly a member of the Carthage Volunteer Fire Department and the Carthage Rod and Gun Club, and a former trustee of the Carthage First Methodist Church. He was a member of Carthage Lodge 1762 B.P.O.E."
Retired from Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation February 1965 after 41 years with company.
"Mr. Shannon has supervised the work of about 38 men. He was a formeman for 25 years before that, and a lineman from 1924 to 1930, having joined the company in January, 1924 at Watertown." (ret. paper)
In 1968, Jack suffered serious operation to correct aneursym in his stomach. Oct, 1971 he had another aneursym in his leg.

Individual Note: Mary has written "My Life History" (1991,1992) which cover her life from 1901 to 1992. Much information about the Shannon, Young, Jarvis families comes from this source. She kept meticulous notes and had a good memory.
Was tutored by Grace Koster, a teacher from Harrisville HS. Grace married brother John.
Summer 1919 worked as waitress, Scanlin's Hotel, Lake Boneparte, near Harrisville.
First teaching contract, Lewisburg, NY, Sep 1921. Sup'd Glenn A. Sealy from New Bremen.
Engaged to Adam June 28, 1922. Married Nov 27, 1922 in St. Michaels Church, Antwerp at 6:00 A.M. Friday morning. Father Sullivan lived in Antwerp was priest in Lewisburg, too. Honeymooned in Watertown. Harriet was birdesmaid. Returned to Jarvis home.
Adam & Mary opened store in Lewisburg, NY home December, 1935 while Mary was pregnant with Ann.
Mary worked many summers begining in 1942 at Camp Drum in the PX and/or officer's club on Saturday and Sunday.
She first visited St. Petersburg, FL in July 1943.
Hysterectomy Jan 2, 1952 and tumor removed with 8" of instestine.
Sold cottage on Lake Ontario Sep 1976.
Bought Mobile home in Lowe's City Mobile Park, St. Petersburg, FL Sep 1982.
1983 Gall Bladder operation by Dr Hubble ref. Dr. Messer at St Anthony's Hospital.
March 3, 1985 suspect Costo Chrondritis, inflamation of cartilage of breast bone and ribs.
Feb 17, 1987 Cataract removed and an implant, right eye, by Dr. Cobb at the clinic.
Aug 7, 1987 same operation on left eye.
Apr 19, 1989 Left kidney, spleen, and cancerous growth removed by Dr. James Krause, Uranologist, after scan, and transfusion on Jan 25, 1989.
Nov 28, 1990 Dr Koch (after tests) diagnosed cancer in left hip and back. Started receiving radiation treatments on left hip and back on Dec 3, 1990. Ann on leave from Caracus. Received 20 treatments by Dec 31, 1990. No relief to pain. Paul came Jan 7, 1991. Dr. Koch said cancer in stomach and right lung and recomended chemotherapy once/week.
Sep 18, 1991 - Saw Dr. Koch who says I am much better pain has subsided in left side. He says I should continue chemotherapy once/week.
