According to Samuel Patrick Shannon, Herbert was hit by a truck in an accident. In his mother's obituary (WDT 12/1/1973) it just says Herbert was killed in North Africa on 11/28/1942 at the age of 19 years. He had been serving with the Army.
Note that his father died on 5/25/1942 just 6 months prior to his death.
