[1983 Christmas Letter]
We are great grandparents for the first time. (Jessica Bernice Pevarnik 7/12/83)
Pat & I went back North in July to Watertown from St Petersburg. I was in hospital two weeks in CCU in September and again in October. However, as always, God id so good to answer all the prayers for me.... My sight continues to deteriorate but I keep trying as you can see. I had laser surgery in March. They feel that it has slowed the bleeding down. That is a blessing.

[Memorial Service Notes:]
Bernice Harrrigan Shannon 1912-1987
"Bernice, as she was known to her many friends, was born in Watertown, New York to James and Jenny Harrigan. She married S. Patrick Shannon in 1928 at the age of 16 years. Marring into the Shannon family brought her many years of love and joy.

"Bernice shared her beliefs and her life with everyone who came in contact with her. It was widely known that you did not get in and out of her home or life without many hugs and kisses.

"She loved music, sewing for everyone, and her hands were never still. She loved having a house full to feed and her seet rolls and heavenly hash have thrilled many who crossed her door step.

"She had a strong personal faith that strengthened and nurtured her, her family, her friends and neighbors. Her words of encouragement and praise were as familiar as her name to those she cared for throughout the years.

"Bernice and Pat's years together through ups and downs always showed their love and respect for each other. She left to her children and their children a capacity to love and care like no other."

Like the Chinese, the Vietnamese celebrate Tet at the beginning of each lunar year; this year from Feb 6 to 8. Packages of five pounds or less sent by Space Available Mail (SAM) by Jan 20 would arrive in time. Parcels should be mailed to Maj. James T. Shannon, U.S. Army Adv. Tm. 1, Quang Da Special Zone, APO San Francisco, 96349.
In Vietnam Tet is not only an occasion for the Vietnamese to rest and have a good time as a compensation for the many days of toil and hardship, but it is also an opportunity for them to remember their ancestors, to maintain the latter's graves, to pay visits to relatives and neighbors to tighten the bonds of family and social relationship, and to forget the past conflicts and differences so as to welcome together a happy New Year, Major Shannon said.
First of all, Tet is a family feast. All members of the family gather under the same roof.
Tet is a religious feast in which people express their prayers and worship for their saints, gods, and ancestors, is a a social occasion and, also a birthday for everybody, the major said.
Major Shannon, serving as an advisor with the Quang Da Special Zone, a Vietnamese Tactical unit, is a son of Mr and Mrs S. Patrick Shannon, Dexter, RD 1.
